If we can become reflectively self-conscious of our conditioned behavior, we can break the cycle by introducing new patterns of behavior that will, over time, replace the old ones and help us regain control of the direction of change in our lives. This liberation from the effects of conditioning, on all levels, is the purpose of Yoga. Ultimately, with proper application we can change habitual patterns at a neuromuscular level, develop new patterns that decrease physical stress and promote skeletal alignment, mechanical freedom, and organic unity, and lead ourselves toward optimum wellness. During your yoga sessions, you should be well hydrated, having a bottle of water with you is a good idea. You should also refrain from eating for at least 2 hours prior to your session. If this is not possible, something small and light, such as a piece of fruit is acceptable. I highly recommend having a journal with you for taking notes, and writing down thoughts or ideas. I also recommend writing in a journal as often as possible as part of a meditation practice. The sessions last 90 min in length and this includes a meditation portion at the end of the practice. |
